Dear Friend of Sooner Youth Camp,
In the summer of 1947 Sooner Youth Camp first met on the beautiful shores of Lake Murray, thus began a tradition of Christian camping that has spanned 60 years and served thousands of young people. The lasting traditions, the eternal friendships, and, most importantly, the spiritual growth that are part of the Sooner experience have made SYC a very special place for many people.
The trend these days is for camps to be held at Christian universities, complete with dorms and air conditioning. It seems difficult to understand how a camp that boasts 100+ degree temperatures, mosquitoes and chiggers can keep campers and staff members coming back year after year, and yet it does.
SYC’s uniqueness is not only in the accommodations. Last year, one camper said, “Everyone is accepted at Sooner. You can be yourself and know that it is okay.” This is true not only in Bible classes or during worship, but throughout the day. Campers constantly encourage one another to try their hardest in Team Sports, to express their ideas in Forum, and to show their talents during Social Hour.
This camp depends on its campers to be leaders, and they take that to heart. Another camper said, “Everyone serves in some way at Sooner – in the cabins, at the table, cleaning up…” What better way for someone to show leadership than to follow Christ’s example by serving others? The campers are taught about Christ not only with the lessons they learn during dedicated study times, but through the actions of one another.
SYC stands as a time-tested, proven Christian camp that teaches its campers through Biblically-based values and traditions that other camps do not offer. We need you to help us ensure that the tradition of Christian camping continues for future generations. Although we do not normally solicit funds, at this stage we need financial assistance from you.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation of $25, $50, $100 or even $500 to Sooner Youth Camp. Our overhead costs are lower than many camps because we rent state facilities and operate only two weeks out of the year. But renting the group camp, feeding the campers and staff, and meeting other financial obligations has begun to become a struggle. We have relied solely on camper fees in the past to supply our operating costs each year, but with fewer campers and rising costs, our reserves have run low. Your donation will allow us to continue making a difference in the lives of our young people.
On behalf of the board of directors, thank you for supporting Sooner Youth Camp and tomorrow’s leaders in the church.
